ABC Progression

An ABC Progression in sports betting is a 3-step wager.  It doesn’t always have to be 3 steps, it can be anything from an AB 2-step progression to an ABCDEF 6-step progression, or even more than 6 which can get very risky.  The letters are just a way to name each step of the progression.

You can think of the ABC progression as a Martingale system, but instead of simply doubling your bet after each loss it won’t always be that straightforward because of the differences in the odds of the wagers.

This might seem confusing but stay with me…

With a normal Martingale system let’s say you bet $100 on black in roulette and it loses.  You double your original bet for $200 and it wins so you end up winning the $100 that you would have won in your first “A” bet.  In sports betting it’s not as simple because of the odds.  Your goal in the progression will be trying to win your original A bet wager amount plus the amount that it would have profited.  Let’s look at an example.

Let’s say your first A bet has odds of -120, so if you wager $100 you would win $83.30.  It loses so you now need to move on to your B bet, the second bet in the progression.  Now if the B bet is even odds then you would simply need to wager $183.30 to win $183.30: the original wager plus what it would have won.  But in sports betting that will rarely be the case, especially in certain progression systems where the deeper steps typically have steeper odds.

So continuing with the example, you need to recoup your original wager of $100 and the $83.30 profit for a total of $183.30 and your B bet is going to have the steep odds of -190.  You now have to wager $348.48 for your B bet at those odds to win the $183.30!  Do you see the difference between that and a normal even odds Martingale?

Let’s do one more example with shorter odds.  Your A bet has odds of -130 and you wager $100 to win $76.90.  It loses and your B bet has odds of -140 so you wager $247.76 to win $176.90.  It also loses so you move on to the C bet which has odds of -150 so you wager $636.67 to win $424.66.  The C bet wins $424.66, your original $100 wager from the A bet, your $247.76 wager from the B bet, plus the original would-be profit of $76.90.  In other words, after winning the C bet, you “won $76.90.”

Here it is visualized differently:

There are many different ways to use progressions in sports betting.  You could use it to bet on a team to score a soccer goal in the 1st half or then if necessary in the 2nd half.  You could do an ABC progression on a baseball team to win at least 1 game of their 3 game series.  We will be adding all kinds of detailed progression systems here in the systems section.
